French Commission Call 10,000 Children Victims of Sexual Abuse in Church

An independent commission set up by the French Catholic Church estimates that 10,000 minors are victims of sexual abuse in the church by religious leaders.

According to Anadolu Agency, Wednesday (3/3/2021) the estimate was issued by the Independent Commission on Sexual Harassment in the Church (CIASE).

"It is possible that this figure will reach at least 10,000." said Jean-Marc Sauve, head of CIASE, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

Between June and October 2019, the commission arranged a public appeal for witnesses to submit depositions.

The commission collected 3,652 testimonies by telephone, 2,459 by email, and 360 by post. In addition, another 1,628 victims filled out responses via questionnaires.

Based on this data, Sauve initially estimated the number of victims to be around 3,000.

"The call to testify of course does not take into account the totality and it is possible that this figure could reach at least 10,000," Sauve told the daily Le Figaro.

He added that the main task of the commission was to analyze the question: "What percentage of victims were touched by (pastors)? Was it 25%? 10%, 5% or less?"

The commission plans to submit its findings on the sexual harassment report and recommendations by the end of September this year.

Following decades of rumors and whispers about sexual harassment in churches around the world, the Conference of Bishops of France (CEF) and the Conference of Religious Men and Women of France (CORREF) in November 2018 pledged to set up an independent commission.

They then appointed Sauve, former vice president of the State Council, to "explain the sexual abuse of minors in the Catholic Church since 1950,"

In addition, they tasked Sauve "to understand the reasons for which these cases were handled, and to make recommendations, particularly by evaluating the actions taken since the 2000s."

Getting no retirement money, former British swimmer sleeps in a cemetery

A former British swimmer has to sleep in a cemetery after losing his job and can't get his pension.

According to The Sun, Wednesday (3/3/2021) Laraine McHendrie has represented his country in swimming competitions around the world.

According to MyLondon, the 64-year-old woman has lost all of her finances and has lived completely penniless.

The former British swimmer retired in the late 1990s, having spent her life living abroad and working as a nanny and social worker.

Laraine (pronounced 'Lorraine) studied at university in London and obtained a degree from the prestigious McGill University in Canada.

"Unfortunately I lost my money (retired). I ended up in my real situation because of changes in the system, and theft and fraud and other things like that.

Laraine claims to have paid into the social security system since the age of 14 and he has been working with me on everything since the age of 11.

But they changed the retirement age, so now it's 66. So the two pensions I paid were transferred, so I'm not eligible for that, "explains Laraine.

"It's a completely different world now - where you look forward to your retirement and you pay into the system, and it's taken away from you." he continued.

After she lost her apartment, property, and money, Laraine turned to social security for help and visited her office every day for over a month, trying to prove that she lived in London.

Because she previously had no mental health problems or children under 16, the former swimmer was ineligible for social assistance and housing.

Eventually, Laraine became homeless, because he had no family, money, or place to live. "So for the last four years, I had absolutely no money."

The former swimmer added that he was fortunate to still be able to eat food from donations made by a number of parties voluntarily.

Vicki Mcgarrigle and Monica White, volunteers for the homeless charity Under One Sky (UOS), have been trying to help Laraine rise through the fundraising site GoFundme.

"He hardly ever complains. He doesn't drink or abuse any substance. He doesn't even swear, and his faith has kept him strong, but women his age shouldn't be on the streets at all," Vicki explained.

"Unfortunately, his homeland has failed him and the system failed Laranie, and many people like him," said Vicki.
